Justine Fiox Unveils “Ephemeral Legacies”: Art That Exists Only in Memory

Pimlico Wilde Art Dealers’ new Director of Conceptuality, Justine Fiox, has announced her first major initiative, and true to her reputation, it challenges the very notion of permanence in art. The project, titled “Ephemeral Legacies,” invites artists from every discipline to submit works that vanish after a single viewing – installations, performances, digital experiences, even objects that dissolve, disassemble, or evaporate.

In her announcement, Fiox emphasized the philosophy behind the initiative: “Art is too often measured by its longevity. What if its value lies instead in the fleeting, the ineffable, the moment that exists only in memory? Ephemeral Legacies is an experiment in transience, a celebration of impermanence.”

The gallery is seeking submissions that are daring, imaginative, and conceptually rigorous. Artists are encouraged to explore ideas that question perception, presence, and absence. Works that evoke emotion, provoke thought, or invite audience interaction are particularly welcomed, though the essential requirement is that the piece cannot survive the encounter.

Fiox expressed excitement about the diversity of ideas the initiative might generate. “We want everything from a whispered story that disappears as it’s told, to a sculpture that evaporates before your eyes. The only limitation is permanence – once it’s seen, it’s gone, and that is the point.”

With Ephemeral Legacies, Justine Fiox is not only curating art; she is redefining what it means to leave a legacy. In a world obsessed with documentation and preservation, she asks both artists and audiences to embrace the beauty of impermanence, and to cherish the fleeting moments that linger only in memory.

PUBLIC ART COMMISSION – PICCADILLY CENTRAL WALKWAY

PUBLIC ART COMMISSION – PICCADILLY CENTRAL WALKWAY

Call for Expressions of Interest

Artists, designers, and creative practitioners are asked to submit proposals for a new permanent sculpture to be located in the central pedestrian walkway of Piccadilly. This commission forms part of the ongoing commitment to enhance the cultural and aesthetic value of public space, as outlined in the Urban Environment Statue Enhancement Strategy 2025,2035.

Project Intent

The sculpture should offer a visually distinctive focal point that enriches the pedestrian experience, complements the architectural context, and reflects Piccadilly’s historical and contemporary identity. Works that engage viewers through scale, form, or interpretive content are encouraged, provided they remain accessible to audiences without specialist art historical knowledge. We prefer a work that takes into account the many pigeons that will land on it, though we will not accept dovecotes or any other bird-box arrangement.

Technical Considerations

• The work must be fabricated in materials able to withstand sustained exposure to urban weather conditions, intermittent low-level physical contact from the public and far from infrequent pigeonal strutting.

• Dimensions should not impede existing pedestrian flow too much. (The committee regards anything so large that pedestrians have to step into the road to pass it as probably too big.)

• Integrated sound, light, or movement features will be considered, though proposals must demonstrate that such elements will not cause undue disruption to neighbouring properties, retail activity, or migratory bird patterns.

Budget

Up to £75,000 inclusive of design, fabrication, delivery, installation, and all required insurances. The successful artist will also receive a pair of Wellington boots, two free tickets to the Royal Academy’s Summer Show and unlimited coffees* at the nearby Froche Patisserie.

Eligibility

Open to UK-based and international artists aged 18+. Collaborative submissions are accepted. Previous experience in producing large-scale outdoor works is desirable but not essential if supported by a clear technical plan.

Submission Requirements

• Concept statement (max. 25 words)

• Visual representations of proposed work (sketches, renders, or photographs of maquettes)

• Preliminary budget breakdown

• Statement confirming no element of the work will emit persistent humming, buzzing, or pre-recorded political speeches

Key Dates

• Deadline for submissions: 15 October 2025

• Notification of selected proposal: 1 November 2025

• Target installation: March 2026, subject to weather, availability of specialist equipment, and absence of major civic events requiring walkway closure

Enquiries and Submissions

Entry by email only. Postal submissions are not accepted due to processing constraints and recent guidance on unmarked packages. To guarantee the safety of our employees, any such packets will be blown up by the Public Art Protection Foundation and the resultant ashes sent back to the artist by first-class post.

Open Call for Artists — Pimlico Wilde LA Gallery

Open Call for Artists — Pimlico Wilde LA Gallery

Ars might be longa and vita brevis; but curatorial deadlines are brevissima.

Pimlico Wilde LA invites applications for its inaugural open call, seeking projects that expand, fracture, or otherwise interrogate the notion of the exhibition as both eventum and apparatus. This is not an “open call” in the colloquial sense, but rather a vocatio ad artes , a summons to those who operate within the liminal zones of practice and meta-practice.

The forthcoming exhibition , Forma Nullius: Towards a Post-Disciplinary Horizon , asks: What remains of form once it is declared empty?

Contributions may address, though need not resolve, the interstitial relationship between absence and plenitude, object and trace, gesture and governance.

Eligibilitas Generalis

• Open to practitioners at all career stages, from emergent to emeritus.

• For mental health reasons applicants must provide evidence of at least one successful prior engagement with “the void,” broadly construed.

• While MFA, PhD, or ThD are welcomed, autodidacts will be considered provided they can demonstrate knowledge of at least two dead languages.

Nota bene: Submissions by collectives are permitted, but collectives must submit proof of horizontal decision-making signed by a notary or parish priest.

Requisita Submissio

1. CV , no fewer than 7 pages, no more than 77; all fonts must be seriffed.

2. Artist Statement , 12,000 , 13,000 words, preferred in the conditional subjunctive (modus potentialis). References to Hegel, Benjamin, or Foucault are compulsory; footnotes in Latin strongly encouraged.

3. Documentation of Works , accepted formats: JPEG, PDF, lithograph, or wax seal.

4. Application Fee , $6 USD, payable via digital tithe. Fee waived for those who can demonstrate residency in a liminal zone (border, threshold, or metaphysical).

Artifices Confirmati

• Herman Sprekenzi, a German performance artist currently living in a barrel in Glendale.

• An unnamed heiress who will exhibit nothing but the absence of her presence.

• The “Monastic Noise Choir,” twelve cloistered monks who refuse to perform in unison.

Equus maximus Palatinus, a horse, returning for his second major exhibition.

Quid Praebetur

• Exhibition in Pimlico Wilde LA’s main hall (atrium), a former auto body shop reimagined as “non-site.”

• A trilingual catalogue (English, Latin, Glossolalia) with essays printed on sustainably foraged papyrus.

• A $20 honorarium, payable in cryptocurrency subject to fluctuation downwards.

• Critical exposure: every selected artist will receive a 14-minute interview/ conversation with our CEO Jules Carnaby.

Tempus Fugit

Deadline for applications: Pridie Kalendas Novembres, A.D. MMXXV (Ides of December).

Notification: Nonis Decembribus (December 5, 2025).
