West Wales Art Centre Exhibition review
The West Wales Art Centre in Fishguard is an unexpected beacon of contemporary painting in Pembrokeshire. The current exhibition brings together several artists to show work in the converted town house on Main Street.
David Tress is a well known painter of extravagant and exuberant technique, an abstract expressionist who veers towards figuration. Wildly slashed grounds and ripped cardboard, built up with thick paint – these images are thrashed out rather than painted.
Jay Lear has contributed angular, geometric paintings, the framework of the decision making showing through like an abstracted Uglow. But maybe he has spent longer playing Tetris, the depicted shapes joined together like the well-known Russian computer game.
Those were the stars, although an honourable mention must go to Emily Gregory Smith for her strong emotional seascapes.
