Fishguard Harbour Watercolour
May 25th, 2007 by fine art dealer
Watercolour painting of the Old harbour at Fishguard, West Wales. The sky is a real treat in this painting by Rebecca Davies. If you’ve ever been to Wales you’ll recognise the brooding skies and the the boat resting in shallow water waiting for the tide to flow back down the small estuary.
This is one of those paintings that perfectly captures the essence of the subject matter. The loose working and brush strokes create an exciting visual freedom that expresses the unexpected beauty of this out-of-the-way Welsh village. This is where the Last Invasion of the UK took place - in 1797! The French sailed to Fishguard and were captured by a much smaller Welsh contingent - the women in their red dresses said to be mistaken for British redcoats. This painting is of the exact location where this last invasion took place!
